The first concept you must grasp is that 3D means 3 dimensional and 2D means 2 dimensional. Now before you think I'm stating the obvious, let me go on to say that the 3D and 2D in animation refer to the dimension in which the animation was created. Ahhhh. The plot thickens eh?

Another way to think of this is to think in terms of a painting and a sculpture. 2D is a painting, and 3D is a sculpture. 3D introduces "depth perspective," so we not only see a rectangle (2D) but a CUBE (3D). You may also want to think of it like being the difference between a photograph of a glass of water (2D) and being able to reach out and actually pick up the glass of water (3D).

Typically, 2D involves "drawing," or movement on, say, a flat surface (sketch pad, etc.) or in the vertical and horizontal planes. 3D involves "modeling," i.e., creating objects in 3-dimensions using a computer software, residing in an expansive virtual environment, complete with lights, reflections, other objects, shadows, etc.

You could start training yourself by comparing a cartoon like Bugs Bunny, Aladdin, Lion King (2D) to "Toy Story 1,2 & 3, "Finding Nemo" and "Incredibles" (3D). If you have not watched any of these great cartoons, you should grab one right away or be branded a neantherdal forever!

Using these questions will help give you a much more thorough idea of who can meet your needs. Aside from the obvious benefit of being able to methodically assess and select the most appropriate person or company to build or improve your website, the longer term benefit is that you have documented information the designer has told you.  A clear design brief and a documented interview will assist if in the future you disagree over what was promised and what was delivered, or what was quoted and what was invoiced.  It is common for clients to want to add or change things on their site once they become more involved in the design process.  If you have a realistic expectation of this and discuss it with your designer up-front, the whole web site development project will run more smoothly.

Next up was the Game Boy Pocket; this was released the same time as Nintendo's N64 console in 1998. It was a slimmer upgrade to the original and came in a variety of colours. The playing screen was still in Grey.

Followed next by the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2001. This portable console provided better graphics than its predecessors and played on a larger screen. 10 of millions were sold around the world.

2003 bought the Game Boy Advance SP. The design for this handheld was considerably different to previous models and was able to close shut like a clam. The screen size was the same as the GBA but it was lighter and smaller. Additional features included a rechargeable battery and a back light for the screen.

The next console is the Nintendo DS, released in 2004 in Japan and the US followed by the 2005 Europe release. This is truly a step up in technology from the last Game Boy. This became the leading portable handheld of its time by a significant margin and features top of the range technology. This included Wi-Fi, a Microphone and Touch Screen, also backward compatibility which meant all previous games could be played on this model.

Nintendo Game Boy Micro was officially the last handheld to bear the famous Game Boy name and is the same as a GBA in a compact form. Released in late 2005 worldwide.

Early 2006 came the Nintendo DS Lite. This was an upgrade to the original DS and features brighter screens and is both smaller and lighter. Another popular handheld.

The most recent portable console to be unleashed by gaming giant Nintendo is the Nintendo Dsi. Japan had first sight in November 2008 whilst the rest of us are still waiting for the release in April 2009. This new console is packed full of the latest technology and functions and is almost going to be a certain hit with gaming fans. The Dsi has 2 touch screens, 2 built in cameras (1 x 3 mega pixels and 1 x 0.3 mega pixels), Wi-Fi, SD Card slot, Picture, Music and Video capabilities. Games are downloadable online as well as new software updates.

Scanners are very precise pieces of equipment, and very expensive. They cost so much because, as their name suggests, they "scan" an image to capture it. When your eyes "scan" the horizon, they are moving. Just like that, in a scanner something has to move, either the image that is being copied, or the part that reads the image. If that movement is not very well controlled, the copy will be blurry or distorted. This level of motion control is very expensive.

A digital camera works much differently, it takes a picture of the whole image at one time. A camera uses lenses to take in a large amount of visual information, and focus it onto a small area that records it. Every part of the image is in correct reference to every other part, there is not any distortion.

There are a few things that you have to do to make sure that your camera records a good image, though:

- If the camera shakes at all, the whole image will be fuzzy.
- The camera has to be at right angles to the object being copied.
- You will need more light to record a crisp image. Use a "document" setting if your camera has one.
- You will need to manipulate the recorded image to make it usable.

The first two concerns can be eliminated by using a tripod. The lighting can be as simple as a floodlight bouncing light off a wall or a ceiling to provide a sharp, well defined picture.

The software is even easier, it is available, for free, on the internet. Just go on Google, and type in "free digital photo software." Choose one that is open source, and therefore totally free! You will need it to crop, adjust lighting levels, and adjust the size of the image to your needs. Almost any graphics program will handle it all, with no problems.

With these tips, and a little practice, you will soon be making "scans" at home, for free!

The written content will always weigh heavily in the buying decision of any book's customer, but so to will what its cover looks like. As a self-published author you have to, therefore, face up to the fact that you need to have a professionally designed cover and, if you lack the artistic skills yourself, then you will need to have one done by a graphic artist. I realise that some of you will most probably be switching off by now. You maybe are saying to yourself, I am going to outsource this problem to someone else and as this is the case then why should I be worried with this? Well, if that is the case then just take a few notes of some of the pitfalls, that you could so easily fall into, if only to make sure that your designer does not!

I am assuming that you want your book to appear in the same format as all the others on sale in your genre? This conformity certainly helps the buyer place your title into the group that they may be selecting their book from and so is to your advantage. With this in mind your book will need to follow certain conventions. As publisher you will have to instruct the printer as to what specification and weight of paper to be used. This applies to both the inside and also the jacket of your book. The thickness of the paper used for the text is also going to have a bearing on the measurements for the books' spine. As the front picture will, very often, wrap around from front to back of the cover, this must also be borne in mind at the design stage. For most novels, or non-fiction types of books that have few illustrations, you will probably stick to using a low-grade cream coloured paper. This, it would seem, is the normal choice for this type of book, rather than the shiny high-grade paper used for the coffee-table format of book.

Selecting the right paper is often a fault made among self-publishers. Some of them will have their books printed on unsuitable paper which is either so thin, that the text shows through from the page on the other side, or so thick that it just feels wrong. Quality of presentation, for the book, can be a really important part of its success, so I would advise you to try to avoid using inappropriate materials if you can.

You will need to have an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) and a bar code printed on the cover if you are serious about selling it. A lack of a barcode and you will then find booksellers and book wholesalers will not want to stock your book. Without an ISBN and it is yet harder still, for the new self-publisher. Everyone from Internet bookstores, wholesalers and the smallest of independent shops all have stock control systems that rely on the ISBN. It is the data that they use to identify a book with on their computers, when searching for and ordering titles, not to mention their Electronic Point of Sale systems (EPOS).

Registering for an ISBN, in the UK and Ireland, is handled by Nielson BookData (www.nbdrs.com) and in the USA by Bowker (www.bowker.com). If you take a look at their websites you will find that they have help pages for new publishers. It is a reasonably simple process to have an ISBN allocated and you will also find there are various pieces of software for generating the bar code available. As an alternative you can simply go to the free online barcode generator at http://www.tux.org/~milgram/bookland/#online

So, now you have had your cover picture designed and hopefully you are pleased with it. You have included your ISBN and a barcode and so now you must decide on the card for the cover. What to be aware of here is choosing a cover that marks easily! If you make this error then you will have far to many damaged and unsaleable books returned to you as a consequence. Speaking now, from my experience as a bookseller for over19 years, I can tell you that as we unpack the books we will look them over as we put them on the shelves. This is the normal thing for a retailer to do, so please don't think that we must be incredibly fussy! As a rule, any that are marked, scratched, torn or damaged in any other way are simply returned to the publisher for replacement, at their expense! The big publishing houses can handle this wastage. As a self publisher, however, this is going to cost you dear. Your own direct-sell customers are likely to be just as picky with the books you send them, after all who do you know that wants to pay full price for a damaged item? It is so much better to chose a paper that is not going to suffer in transit, in the first place. For this you are going to have to rely on your printer's technical knowledge. Ask them what they would recommend, always bearing in mind your budget.

My final piece of advice to you from the sharp end, so to speak, is that booksellers know that a black cover, or black print, on a matt laminate paper will always mark! Despite this the publishers continue to send out books with this type of finish and we booksellers continue to return them as "damaged on arrival". So chose your paper wisely and take advice from your printer. Remember they will print your book on what ever type of paper that you specify, no matter whether it is suitable or not. As professionals they will probably know the best solution for the job but do as the customer asks of them. Bear in mind the thickness of the paper used inside to make sure the printing on your spine is in the correct place, do include an ISBN and a barcode on the back and do try to steer clear of black covers!

1. .doc - this is the file extension for a file created by Microsoft Word, the most popular word processing software. The most recent version of Microsoft Word is OOXML-based and has the filename extension of .docx

2. .jpg - this is the filename extension for the compressed graphic format standardized by the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group). Most digital images we see in the internet and in computers are in the JPEG format and has the filename extension of .jpg. This file can be viewed in most image viewing and editing software.

3. .exe - this is the extension for Windows or DOS executable programs. If a file has this extension, it is a program and runs when opened. Self-extracting archives also have this extension.

4. .htm or .html - the extension for HTML web page. HTML stands for "Hyper-Text Markup Language", the language used in writing web pages. This very page you are looking at now is a web page with a filename extension of .htm.

5. .mp3 - the filename extension for compressed audio format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group. This audio format is very popular nowadays because its size is many times smaller than that of the Wave or AIF file. This makes it easy for people to download music from the internet. The downside of .mp3 is that the quality of sound is not as good as that of the Wave or AIF file.

6. .mpg - this is a video format standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). This file can be played using Windows Media Player, Winamp, Roxio Easy Media Creator, Apple QuickTime Player, or VLC Media Player.

7. .zip - this is the extension for any file that is compressed using the ZIP compression, a kind of compression which allows every file in the archive to be compressed separately. Programs that can open .zip files include WinZip, PKZip, and the popular WinRar.

8. .pdf - this is the file extension for the document created by Adobe Acrobat or other PDF producing programs. PDF stands for "Portable Document Format" and may contain images, texts, forms, outlines, and links. PDF files are usually created from another file, like a web page or a Word document.

9. .xls - this is the filename extension for Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet created with Microsoft Excel, the most popular spreadsheet program.

10. .msi - this is the extension File extensions used for misc files, files that contain information about a particular installer. This is used for Windows updates and other software installers.

1) Display your DRAW toolbar by selecting View > Toolbars > Drawing.

2) Place your cursor where you want to insert your chart or diagram.

3) Click the 3-spinning-balls icon on your DRAW toolbar. The tooltip message should read "Insert Diagram or Organization Chart."

4) From the Diagram Gallery window, select the Organization Chart button on the Upper Left. The ORGANIZATION CHART Mini-Bar display automatically.

5) Click Insert Shape drop-down menu on the Mini-Bar to insert "subordinate," "coworker" or "assistant" boxes.

6) Click the Autoformat button on the Mini-Bar to select one of the chart templates.

7) To delete a box, click the Select drop-down menu on the Mini-Bar, then press the Delete button.

8) Click on individual boxes on the chart to add text.

9) Click Layout drop-down menu on the Mini-Bar to change the layout of the whole chart and select one of the following options: Standard, Both Hanging, Right Hanging, Left Hanging.

10) Select a text wrapping option (if need be) by clicking the Text Wrapping button on the Mini-Bar and selecting one of the available options.

11) Experiment with other buttons on the DRAW toolbar for an infinite variety of different effects. For example, select an organizational box and change its color by clicking the Paint Bucket button, or add drop shadows by clicking 3D button and selecting an option.

There are several expensive graphic-creation software out there as well. But why spend the extra money when you have great tools at your disposal, already built into the MS Word?

The World Wide Web has allowed many people to find their part time dream job, or full time career.
